The Wichita Appraisal District (WAD) is a political subdivision of the state with the responsibility of appraising property in Wichita County for ad valorem tax purposes for each taxing unit that imposes ad valorem taxes on property.

WAD is governed by a nine-member board of directors.  Five directors are appointed by the taxing units that participate in the district in the manner prescribed by Sec. 6.03 tax code.  Three directors are by majority vote at the general election for state and county officers by the voters of the county. The county tax assessor-collector as an ex-officio member.

Effective January 1, 2014, members of the Appraisal Review Board (ARB) will be appointed by the Wichita County administrative district judge.  The ARB consists of fourteen members who serve 2-year staggered terms.  ARB members are limited to serving 3 terms.

Effective January 1, 2025, Section 6.0301 of the Texas Property Tax Code provides that the board of directors is the appointing authority of the ARB.  The board of directors acting as an appointing authority must make appointments to the appraisal review board by majority vote, with at least two members of the majority being elected members of the board of directors.
